Emergency work, a wide radius, and no idea where visibility stopped
A trade where the customer is not shopping around
Tree work divides cleanly into planned jobs and emergencies, and the emergencies are what pay. A branch comes down across a driveway and the customer searches once, calls two or three of the businesses that appear. And books whoever answers. There is no second visit to the results page.
That makes visibility at the moment of the search almost the entire commercial question. It also makes the trade unusually hard to measure. Because the work happens across a wide radius and there is no shopfront for a grid to sit on.
A position that had never been checked more than a mile out
The business had a position in mind and it came from the usual place: someone searching from the yard, on a phone that had looked up the company many times before. Both conditions inflate the result, which is why the figure felt reassuring.
The first coverage measurement across the actual service radius returned something different. Visibility held near the registered address and then stopped. Not a gradual fade with distance, but an abrupt edge a short way out. Beyond it the business did not appear at all for the terms that produce emergency calls.
The outer districts had been treated as unwinnable for years. They had never been measured, so nobody knew whether that was true.
Four changes, in the order that made them assessable
Nothing here needd new content, links or budget. Three of the four were corrections to things that were already wrong.
Baseline the whole radius first
Coverage measured across the full service area on a fixed frame before a single change was made. Without that reading, everything that followed would have been unprovable.
Fix the primary category
The category did not describe the emergency work that produces the calls. It is one edit and it changes which searches the business is eligible for at all.
Rebuild the service list
Brought into line with what the business sells and with the wording used on its own site. So the two sources stopped contradicting each other.
Then, and only then, add activity
Posting and review requests put on a schedule once the record was correct. So their effect could be read separately from the corrections.
The edge moved outward
Re-measured on the same frame four weeks after the corrections, with no other changes made in between.
Around 250% growth means about three and a half times the starting point. The figure covers calls and direction requests attributed to the business profile, per location. It is not revenue and it is not a ranking position.
- The abrupt edge was a profile problem, not a geography one. That distinction is invisible from a single position and it decided everything that followed.
- The category change did most of the work. One field, one edit. And the largest single movement in the account.
- The outer districts were never unwinnable. They were unmeasured. This is a different thing and a much cheaper one to fix.
- Roughly 250% growth in calls and direction requests per location, against the baseline recorded before any of it started.
What this does not claim
The figure is calls and direction requests attributed to the business profile. It is not revenue, and no attempt is made here to convert one into the other.
A service-area business is measured by coverage rather than by a grid centred on an address. Because there is no meaningful centre. That makes the reading valid for this trade and not directly comparable with a shopfront business.
The corrections and the activity were deliberately separated in time so their effects could be told apart. Run together, neither could have been attributed.
Questions about this account
Why measure coverage instead of running a grid?
A grid radiates from a centre. A business working from a yard with no public premises does not have a meaningful centre. So a grid around the registered address measures the wrong geography.
How was the abrupt edge different from a normal fade?
An even fade with distance is proximity working as expected. A collapse over a short distance means profile strength stops carrying the business at a specific radius. This is a fixable record problem.
Why change only the category and services first?
So the effect could be attributed. Running corrections and new activity together would have made it impossible to say which produced the movement.
How long before the change registered?
Category and service edits usually show within days. The re-measurement was taken four weeks later to be past ordinary variation.
Does this apply to other emergency trades?
The shape reading does, locksmiths, drain clearance, glaziers and mobile mechanics all have the same geometry. The size of any particular result does not generalise.
What would have happened without the baseline?
The improvement would have been real and unprovable. Nothing recorded afterwards can show what the position was beforehand.
